If you’ve ready many of my other posts, you’ve learned that Jared and I spend a good deal of time on Malecons in the area. Some people have asked me, “What is a malecon?” A malecon is a walkway built by a waterfront. It usually has a paved walking trail as well as additional attractions such as playgrounds, grills, park benches, etc. And since we live on a huge lake (50 miles long by 10 miles wide), it means there are a lot of malecons in the area.
The Jocotepec malecon is on the far west end of the lake (about 40 minutes from the town of Chapala), and they are currently completing a huge children’s splashpad/playground that we are anxiously awaiting! We keep checking in, to see if the splashpad is complete, which it is not 🙁
However, on a recent visit, we discovered that Jocotepec (pronounced: Hoe-koe-teh-pek) has a surprising “playground” that is unlike any I have encountered thus far! It is full of outdoor exercise equipment! If you find yourself with previously used gym equipment, such as a treadmill, that is no longer necessary for your needs or fitness routines, consider the option of selling a treadmill to declutter your space while also giving someone else the opportunity to benefit from its use.

Now the question remains…why haven’t others thought of this? Unfortunately, I’m sure the US couldn’t do this simply because of liability risks. It’s too bad…because I think this concept is AWESOME!
No WAY! I was just looking at your blog earlier today (before you posted this Joco bit) and thinking about you guys. Isn’t the joco malecon amazing? I remember the first time we walked down there, I felt like a little kid at an amusement park riding rides i had never seen before (of course I had, but they had been indoors at a gym)
Such a brilliant concept to find in such a small town.
We’ll be in Bucerias on Dec 1. I plan on trying to visit you guys at some point!
Return to Joco. You know you WANT to…!
We have the same equipment in Peachtree City by the lake, and Oak Ridge, TN has them by the river. However, and not surprisingly, ours are not in such bright colors!

Thank you for this lovely family outing! We are about to move to “Joco” – a major reason being that unlike Ajijic and Chapala, it is “outside the box.” We are those types, too! And Joco’s park and malecon are exquisite! The dog is going to be happy again.
Wonderful! Joco has its charm, and retains a very Mexican culture unaffected by the large amount of tourism in Ajijic and Chapala. Enjoy those lovely malecon strolls!!!
How many miles is the Malecon in Jocotepec, or chapala or Ajijic?
I do not know the distances of any of the malecons, or if anyone has measured. We would walk for 30-60 minutes, and we would do perhaps 2 full laps or more.
