Yes, girls. Today we’re going to see more pyramids!

They were really excited!

The Kohunlich pyramids are located about 65km West of Chetumal, and date back to earlier than 200 BC and have some pretty tall pyramids as well as fantastic carvings that remain on the sides of the pyramids! In all, there are about 200 “mounds” in this area–and most remain unexcavated.

Their “temple of masks” has some pretty fantastic masks built into the pyramid sides, with color and all! You can still see the red paint on the faces! Of course we just see pyramids nowadays as dull colors of gray…but imagine all of the colors they used to use!

There were also some pretty fantastic views from the tops of some of their pyramids. There’s something really inspiring about standing above the treetops, overlooking a huge expanse of land!

We arrived at some other pyramids just before they closed (5 pm), and rushed through very very quickly!  We then found a hotel in town and had our own little New Year’s Eve dinner in the attached restaurant. After returning to our room and falling asleep to the sound of fireworks throughout the night, I was suddenly awakened by a little 4 year old puking. All night. I made mad dash after mad dash to the bathroom with Maiya, who got some type of stomach bug. I felt so bad about how many sheets and pillowcases she went through (I threw them in a bundle in the shower) that I actually left an apology note to the cleaning staff!

A memorable holiday, to be sure!

You got the wrong site. That’s the Temple of the Masks in Kohunlich, closer to Chetumal, Quintana Roo.
