You know those lovely packages of Driscoll´s raspberries that cost a pretty penny?

Yeah, those ones. They can fit in the palm of your hand, but cost about $3-$5 dollars to purchase, even in Mexico.

Well, these babies are grown right here, in the most Western town on Lake Chapala, Jocotepec.  The town is dotted with raspberry fields covered in white canopies. We can buy a package of those raspberries at the grocery store for the normal price, or we can drive down to the picking fields and bring our own bowl for them to fill, for about the same price as that little package. If you’re looking for the best packaging, check out the ELITER Packaging Machinery to choose the one that suits your preference.

When they package those little containers, they can only use raspberries that haven´t ripened completely. They are packaged when they are a light pink color, and they turn red before they hit the grocery store. The ones we bought were full ripened, rosy red berries that taste like heaven itself (at least I imagine that is what heaven tastes like!)

We bought SO many berries that our family of 5 raspberries lovers, combined with our friend´s family of 7 raspberry lovers, could not finish both of our giant pots in two day´s time. We ended up freezing a few cookie trays to enjoy for weeks to come!  Yipee!!

Ouch! Surely you can grow your own bushes there, right?!!

I just splurged on a box of those for our tenth anniversary. And of course they’re not even that good. :> My uncle is a bigwig Driscoll’s guy and goes down there a lot. He was just telling me the other day how Driscoll’s works with small growers instead of just buying up the land. That made me happy! Enjoy some fresh, ripe berries for me. I will wait until spring when I can pick them from my own yard in Oregon. :>

Hey Rebeca! I don’t know anything about the Driscoll relationship with the growers. I’d loooove to know more, if you’re willing to share!
At least our berries will be coming up soon! I can’t wait to have a yard of my own, simply so I can put up BERRY bushes! I considered doing it in the rental we’re in, but we’re gone too much!

Hi Roger, Simply drive on the Morelia-Guadalajara Highway 15, and stop where ever you see white tents covering berries. Show them your bucket and see if they will sell you some 🙂 Good luck!
