We left Lake Bacalar on New Year’s Eve, and headed West on the major highway towards the Southern part of the state of Campeche. On the way, we stopped at a few pyramids.

We arrived at the Kohulich Pyramids as the sky darkened with storm clouds.

We noticed the couple departing as we arrived was pretty well drenched. We didn’t really stop to contemplate why, but continued on our way into the park.

As soon as we had gotten a fair distance into the grounds, the rain clouds released a MIGHTY downpour!

Sorry for the photo quality…but it’s hard to take good photos in the rain!  Here you can see that the grounds had some scattered large palm trees–our only chance at protection from the rains. So, we quickly ducked under the tree canopy, hoping to stay dry.

The trees provided great coverage at first. But the rains kept coming and coming and coming, and finally even the dense canopy started leaking!

The kids ran from one tree to another…hoping to find a dryer spot. Next, they crowded under my tree!

Still trying to hide from those rain drops!

Can you see the amount of moss on these tree trunks?  It was like a fuzzy carpet (a wet fuzzy carpet, that is)!

Soon, there were rivers running under our feet. Good thing we were all wearing sandals!  Our feet were soaked!

After about 15 minutes of waiting under these trees, and getting wet despite our best efforts…we finally decided to enjoy ourselves!

I personally love warm rain…and who doesn’t dream of playing in some big puddles?

We stepped out from our protection…

and we made a splash!

or two!

The rain *then* started to settle, just as a huge tour group arrived (suited with umbrellas to stay dry). We walked around the remaining pyramids in our sopping-wet clothes and hair. With Gringos being very uncommon in these parts (not to mention sopping wet ones), I’m sure we were a sight to see!

Here is a video I made that hopefully can catch some of the humor of us trying to hide from the rain!

We’re homebound, again! Starting to reverse directions and head back to the State of Jalisco!
