The rainy season

 The rainy season in Mexico begins after a long 2 1/2 months of endless warmth.  We live in Ajijic, which is about 1 hour from Guadalajara in Central Mexico, and located at approximately 5,000 feet elevation. The weather is fantastic, but there are a few months that make me a sissy. April and May are WARM by my (former) Alaskan standards. We were living in a home without fans (and too many skylights), which meant that our home was 90 degrees (and warmer) inside.

Needless to say, we were counting down the days to that early June date when the rains began!  This year they began on June 7th, and it was a BEAUTIFUL rainy season!

When the rains come down, they really come down. In the last part of the video, you will see some clips I took a video after leaving a restaurant in downtown Ajijic one evening. In the below clip, the streets were so full of water that there was no possible way a person could get to their car without the water going at least halfway up their calves.  Plan to wear sandals on a night out (who wants soggy socks and tennis shoes?)!

The rains start in early to mid-June, and continue on through September. In theory, people have said that it rains almost every night (and mostly at night…rarely in the day). But each season brings its own story. This was a rather dry rainy season, and we often went 4 or 5 days without rain!  But when it rained, it POURED!

I have NEVER seen or heard a thunderstorm as fierce as the storms in Mexico! The thunder booms so loudly that it is impossible to sleep through them! I have literally have heard/felt the thunder set off car alarms multiple times…yes, it is that strong!

 A few days after the rainy season started, I was horrified to find a MASSIVE ants crawling all over the Ajijic Malecon (our favorite walking spot). I found myself steering the baby stroller around all of the bugs, because crunching their huge bodies seemed really horrific!  Perhaps it bothered me more than Jared?  Look at the size of these bugs!

Now compare them to normal size ants (you will have to squint…but there are normal size ants in a line walking through the crack on the left…this ant could eat 10 of them for breakfast!

What was even more surprising was that a large amount of these big ants had wings. And there were wings lying all over the sidewalk. I talked to some locals about the ants, and they said they believe that the ants fly down from the trees after the rains begin, then clip off their own wings, and dig underground. It is now October (can you believe it?!), and the rains have almost completely subsided.  Boo hoo!
