We spent only 3 1/2 weeks in Ubud, but by the time we got there we were eager for some fun children’s activities. We managed to find a Ceramics studio, Sari Api, that was willing to teach a small “private class” for my two girls, and a friend’s two children.

The fee was 150,000 Rp per child for the small group, and they were able to complete a few projects that they could have eventually taken home (after letting it dry for several weeks, and then having it fired in the kiln).

The kids really enjoyed the simple class, and were each able to make a mug.

Each child also got a turn on the wheel, and were able to make a small bowl with assistance.

The studio also has group children’s classes on Saturdays for 60,000 per kid. A lot of kids show up, and there are usually 2-3 staff members on hand. The parents hang out with kids and help them, or sit back and socialize during class. We attended a few times, and the kids were able to get some more practice in with ceramics!

We honestly didn’t keep any of the pieces they made. We just told the staff to scrap them and use the clay again, since we wouldn’t be there long enough for their work to dry and be fired. It would have been fun to slowly create a small cup/bowl collection, if we we were there longer, however!  Of course, the kids were extremely proud to be able to create something with their own hands!

That sounds wonderful! I was just thinking today how nice it would be to go spend a few months in Ubud. We’re in Florida now, having a great time but missing Asia.
