If you’re driving East on I-84 from Portland (about 30 minutes away along the Columbia River), you can’t help but notice the towering Multnomah Falls cascading down the the cliffs next to the freeway. I first saw these falls twelve years ago when Jared whisked me away to the Oregon Coast for our honeymoon. We didn’t stop then…and, in fact, I’ve never been able to get him to stop since. We’ve usually blamed our inability to stop on bad timing (i.e. “the kids are asleep”, “too bad it’s raining”, or “we’re on a tight schedule”), but this time–we had left some wiggle room to stop.
We parked in the large parking lot just off the freeway, and after a 5 minute walk with a stroller, we were at the viewing area with an hundred other tourists. We stuck to the lower trail, but there is an option to walk another several hundred feet up a paved trail to Benson Bridge to view it closer.
Caught deep in thought….
Lastly, on our walk back to the van, we stopped and let the kids wade in a safe section of water that goes under a bridge towards the parking lot. It was interesting to note that we were the only Caucasian, English-speaking-as-our-first-language family doing this…but hey…what do we care?

You write so well I feel as if I were there walking with you.
What beautiful experiences your family has had together. Keep up the writing and send them to me.
